Spencer Wilson for Lagom
One of Yellow House's favourite collaborations is the recently launched range of greeting-cards by Spencer Wilson for innovative publisher Lagom.
As soon as we saw Spencer Wilson's artwork, we knew we had found the perfect fit between artist and publisher. Both Spencer and Lagom have a unique signature style; encompassing top quality design and creativity.
Lagom describe the range as 'Super cute cards - full of friendly cheer, perfect for saying happy birthday, congratulations, good luck, get well, or just for telling someone special how much you care".
All cards are produced using gold foil blocking with a matching poppy red envelope and gold envelope seal for that touch of modern elegance. Printed on heavy-weight paper from Swedish Mill Munken, the cards are left blank for your own message.
Launched at Top Drawer, London, in January 2015 - it was perfect timing for Spencer who couldn't wait to send his Mum a 'Spencer' birthday-card! We chatted to Spencer about the Lagom range:
Which design did you do first?
Lagom initially made a selection from some existing designs I had such as the Strongman, Trumpet man and the Bee Dancer. However I decided to take opportunity to indulge and create some new designs taking insects as the inspiration.
How do you create your work?
Most of my work begins as a bad pencil drawing. This then gets quickly realised in Illustrator and refined until I’m happy with it. With this set of designs I began with the Bee, choosing a colour way that would complement the gold and developed from the there. Often when using a limited palette it’s what you don’t include that can make the design work so there’s plenty of tweaking.
Who or what is the inspiration behind your man featured in the Strongman & Philosophical design?
I took the inspiration from the circus when I created a print for Soma Gallery. I’ve always loved the the strongman and using simple shapes such as circles lent itself to the original design of him lifting a massive dumbbell over his head.
Do you have a favourite design?
From the set my favourite has to be the cricket dancing with the ladybird. I love the balance in the pose.
What do you like most about the Lagom brand?
I’ve bought Lagom cards for a while so to get a commission / licence made my day. Lagom were great to work with, very honest in feedback and the Lagom brand has a lovely print production value ( which is why we buy them) - They also sent me some tasty chocolate for christmas ; )
Which one did you choose to send to your Mum?
Mum always loves to see my work, wherever it appears, so it was only right that she got the first card. I sent her the Bee Dancer for her birthday which she loved.
If you were to give the range a name of your own, what would it be?
They’ve all got individual titles, so I’m not quite sure. Lagom translates as ‘just enough’ so I guess ‘just for you’ would be quite fitting.
