This month we are celebrating the painting of Jonathan Smith. Developed in his Sussex studio from drawings and colour sketches, Jonathan Smith's process begins with travel, walking, and recording in all weathers.

Jonathan's subject matter often encompasses landscapes and seascapes, in soft tonal colours and lines which explore the nature of paint and gestural mark-making.

Born in Aberdeen, Jonathan Smith has worked as a musician, a technical illustrator, and more recently as an art teacher & Head of Creative Arts. His paintings explore the relationship between light, location, and the painted surface.

Trained at Gray's School of Art, and shown by the RBS and RA, his work is held in private and public collections in the UK, Europe, the US, and the Far-East.

Jonathan Smith's work has a rich vibrancy of both colour, tone, and atmosphere evoking that rare feeling of taking the viewer straight to the site of the painting, making us feel the rich sunshine on the grass - even in the depths of winter!
